Chris Bumstead Speaks on The School of Greatness

When you become an Olympia champion, there is a level of fame and notoriety that comes with that. Some winners go on to achieve much higher levels of awareness and enter mainstream culture. Some names that may come to mind include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lee Haney, Jay Cutler, and Phil Heath. Nowadays, the man that fits that bill is Chris Bumstead.

The five-time and reigning Classic Physique Olympia champ has earned top-level success, and he shared some insight into his journey on The School of Greatness podcast with host Lewis Howes.

The 90-minute plus interview covered a lot of ground, including how Bumstead handled mental health struggles during his childhood, planning for future parenthood, and his rise to superstardom in the IFBB Pro League and beyond. He shared part of that rise including dealing with a lot of pressure, and he realized that pressure was not allowing him to be present in the moment.

“When I won my first Olympia, all I felt was relief that it was over. I didn’t really feel joy or happiness because there was a lot of stress around the Olympia that I was just suppressing.”

Part of that stress was being caused by health issues he was facing in 2018 and 2019. He would clear those hurdles, but he realized he needed to work on handling that pressure so he could be the best possible version of himself moving forward.

“I want to be a better Mr. Olympia. I want to enjoy it more. I want to enjoy the journey and be more present.”

Now he stands atop the bodybuilding world, and he is crushing it in business as well thanks to his supplement line, which has been made available in Walmart and Sam’s Club locations. He and 2016 Bikini Olympia champion Courtney King are expecting their first child as of this writing, and he is also enjoying his offseason before committing to his 2024 title defense against the likes of Arnold Classic winner Wesley Vissers and two-time Olympia runner-up Ramon “Dino” Rocha Querioz.

The full interview can be seen on Howes’ YouTube channel and heard on all major streaming platforms. The School of Greatness is considered one of the top personal development podcasts in the world. Past guests on the show include the late Kobe Bryant, Ice Cube, Venus Williams, Tony Robbins, and many more. So, Bumstead joins some elite company and places a big spotlight on bodybuilding thanks to his appearance.
