Nutrition for Abdominals

Many of you will hate me after reading this article. In it, I’m going to tell you some truths about having a six-pack that most people won’t. These are terrible truths. If you don’t want to know them, avert your eyes now!

Because unless you’re a genetic anomaly like James Ellis, who eats whatever he wants while maintaining a 24-pack, you must permanently say goodbye to certain foods. They simply cannot exist in your world. I believe the last time I had a sandwich was in 2012. Pasta? I’m not sure what you’re referring to. Did you mean quinoa?

Yes, you can be “fit” and healthy while incorporating any foods you want, but if you’re interested in having an actual six-pack—with real lines and definition that cause others to pretend they aren’t staring—then there are a few foods you need to cut out this second.

A word of caution before I name these naughty foods: You may have heard that some elite athletes with eye-popping physiques use a “cheat meal,” wherein once a week they gorge on any foods they want. This works. But in order for it to work properly, they must be religiously strict for the remainder of the week.

Pasta. If you’re okay with a three-bite serving of this carb-laden repast, feel free to keep the p-word in your vocabulary. But for the rest of us, who like it by the bowlful and loaded with alfredo and parmesan cheese, say arrivederci.

Bread. Yes, there are certain breads out there that are essentially a bunch of nuts and grains glued together, but we all know that’s not bread. Real bread makes you doughy, so forget about it.

Liquid carbs. Any liquid that contains carbs—milk, juice, beer, pop—there’s no room for this nonsense. These add useless calories to your daily intake and make it near impossible to get bulging abs.

I’m sure some of you are thinking, “What kind of freak can actually remove these foods from his diet?” Well, the average person can’t do it. The average person doesn’t have a six-pack. But this is what it takes if you want a core worth snapping selfies over.

With all that said, the above list is far from all-encompassing. Of course simple sugars such as candy, ice cream, pizza, fast food, and other obvious garbage need to go.

Let’s finish with some amazing foods you can substitute. The following are low-glycemic, healthy, and full of flavour.

Quinoa. Not only is it light and easy to digest, but once you season it and add some jalapeños or garlic, the flavour is amazing. Add some green veggies and clean protein too, and you have something that resembles a killer rice bowl.

Sweet potatoes/yams. So much flavour and very little needs to be done with them, other than to cook them up. My kids love these with nothing on them—they have so much taste even when plain. These clean carbs will have you feeling alert and energetic, not lethargic and bloated.

Broccoli. This high-roughage green vegetable is a staple for most elite athletes. I eat three to four heads per day. Yes, I said “heads.” It will slow the release of sugars into your bloodstream and balance your insulin, allowing for a better fat-burning environment and an enhanced metabolism. If you apply these changes, you’ll experience a difference in the way you look and feel. So before you reach for that bagel, remember: Killer abs start in the kitchen, not the gym. Markus also makes sure to stack his fat burners properly!
